In a double observation exercise, during August and September 2023, the artist captures daily images of the Earth taken by the GOES NOAA satellite, which in turn observes us from its orbit in outer space. The compilation of images generates a time-lapse video of the passage of clouds, day, night and hurricanes that cross the Earth. Almost like a blink, the artist notices some digital errors appear over the images, glitches that momentarily interrupt the flow of time and movement, produced by solar radiation over the satellite.
In this installation, each of the nine hurricanes that passed over the Earth during this time has a voice. We observe them all, we are under their eye and they speak to us. Afflicted, they tell us their sensations as they pass through the Earth and, simultaneously, errors in the data provide news about the effects of our impact on life on a planet that is increasingly out of balance. A paradox. Although we have more technologies to see the world, to measure precisely and in advance what we understand as “natural disasters,” awareness of ecological connections and common efforts to slow the acceleration of climate change are still scarce. Despite the great development of these technologies, currently the rapid and unpredictable natural variations mean that we cannot anticipate the appearance of a hurricane.
